How to Choose the Right Laptop Adapter for Your Laptop

Introduction

Picking the wrong laptop adapter is one of the most common — and most expensive — mistakes we see at our Nehru Place counter. A mismatched charger can under-power your battery, trip your motherboard's protection circuit, or in worst cases damage the DC-in jack.

This guide walks you through the three things that actually matter when sourcing a replacement adapter, whether you're a technician fulfilling a customer order or an end user looking for a long-lasting charger.

1. Match the voltage exactly

Voltage (V) must be identical to what the laptop expects. A 19V laptop needs a 19V adapter — not 18.5V, not 20V. Even a small mismatch forces the regulator to work outside its design window and shortens its life.

2. Wattage can go up, never down

Wattage (W) is the maximum power the adapter can deliver. You can safely use a higher-wattage adapter, but never a lower one. A 90W laptop will throttle and slow charge on a 65W brick — and the brick itself will run hot enough to fail prematurely.

  • Ultrabooks: typically 45W – 65W
  • Mainstream laptops: 65W – 90W
  • Gaming and workstations: 120W – 230W
  • Type-C / USB-PD laptops: 45W – 100W via PD

3. Verify the connector pin and polarity

Connector geometry varies by brand and even within a brand's own lineup. HP uses blue-tip and yellow-tip barrels, Dell uses 7.4mm and newer 4.5mm, Lenovo has slim-tip and square-tip, and modern ASUS / Acer / Samsung models have moved to USB-C Power Delivery.

When in doubt, send our team your laptop's model number and we will confirm the exact connector before dispatching the order.

Why a BIS-certified adapter matters

BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification means the adapter has been tested for input voltage tolerance, leakage current, insulation and over-temperature protection. ProCare adapters are BIS-certified, which is non-negotiable for service centres serving corporate clients.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a higher-watt adapter on my laptop?
Yes, as long as voltage and connector match. A 90W adapter on a 65W laptop is safe and will run cooler.
Is a Type-C charger universal?
USB-C Power Delivery is broadly compatible, but the wattage must meet your laptop's minimum requirement, otherwise it will charge slowly or only while powered off.
Do you stock adapters for Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba?
Yes. ProCare keeps compatible adapters in stock for every major laptop brand, with single-unit and bulk options.
