Introduction
Most laptop failures fall into a small number of repeatable patterns. Recognising them quickly is the difference between a 20-minute swap and a half-day diagnostic.
Display issues
- Flickering — usually a loose LVDS / eDP cable or failing inverter
- Lines across the screen — almost always the panel itself
- Dim image — backlight failure, often a screen replacement
Keyboard issues
- Phantom typing — liquid ingress under the keyboard membrane
- Single dead key — debris under that key, otherwise replace the unit
- Whole row dead — ribbon connector seating or torn ribbon
Power issues
- No charge — start with the adapter, then DC jack, then battery
- Charges only when off — failing battery or weak adapter
- Adapter buzzing — replace immediately, internal capacitors degrading
Frequently asked questions
- When should I replace vs repair?
- If a single component (battery, keyboard, adapter, screen) is the fault, replace. Board-level repairs are only economical on high-value laptops.
